Driver Rehabilitation

Our Mission Statement:

The ability to drive plays an important part in a person's overall independence. The skill of operating a motor vehicle may be impaired due to an injury, illness, a congenital disability or aging. Everyday tasks of going to the grocery store, doctor's office, or participating in social activities become a major obstacle for someone who cannot drive. For persons with physical, cognitive or visual impairments, the ability to regain driving skills or learn to drive for the first time is critical to leading an independent lifestyle. Our goal is to meet that need.

Our Driver Rehabilitation program will provide a driver evaluation, training, education, and/or prescription for adaptive vehicle equipmentfor people with disabilities.

Eligibility requirements may include, but are not limited to:

  • Persons with physical/cognitive deficits that may include
    • Cerebral Palsy

What happens next?

Evaluation - Once you're referred and accepted in the program, we assess your physical needs and driving knowledge. The evaluation is broken into two sections:

  • A clinical evaluation helps us determine your visual perception, reaction times and other necessary skills for driving safely
  • A behind-the-wheel assessment helps us evaluate your driving skills in an actual traffic situation

Training - A Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist will train you using one of our vehicles that have been adapted for "behind-the-wheel" driver training. Specialists can also perform car and van evaluations. Training includes:

  • Reviewing safe driving procedures and maneuvers
  • Increasing your endurance in traffic situations
  • Selecting the right adaptive equipment for your driving needs
  • Maintaining that equipment
  • Practicing emergency procedures and defensive driving
